Welcome to Alternate Sources

Alternate Sources is a CD-ROM database and paperback directory of resources for people interested in alternate sexualities.

Before you install or run Alternate Sources, please read the licence agreement.

The Alternate Sources CD-ROM (ISBN 1-895857-10-4, Standard edition and 1-895857-11-2, Professional edition) and paperback directory (ISBN 1-895857-09-0) are published by Kink, Ink in Toronto, Canada.

The CD-ROM is readable by both Macintosh and PC computers. When you mount your Alternate Sources CD-ROM, you will see only the files applicable to the computer where the CD-ROM is being used. The Alternate Sources CD is provided in CD-R form, so that you get information as up-to-date as our master database is at the time of your purchase.

The professional version allows users to print letters, mailing labels, envelopes, and other listings that are tailored to the individual user. Please contact Alternate Sources at the address below for more details about the CD-ROM, professional edition.

If you bought your Alternate Sources CD-ROM from us, you are already registered and will receive information about data and application updates as they occur. Our preferred method is to send you the updates by e-mail, using our list server. You will be placed on the update list as soon as we have your e-mail address. If, after receiving your first update from the list server, you decide not to remain on the list, please follow the instructions in our e-mail message to remove yourself from the list. It only takes about 30 seconds to complete the task.

Contained on this CD-ROM are:

All the text files are available on the CD-ROM as text files, .html files (for use with your Web browser), and Adobe Acrobat .pdf files.

Installing Alternate Sources on Macintosh

System Requirements for Macintosh

You will need:

If you do not have System 7.5.5 or newer, we recommend obtaining it. It can be downloaded from Apple Computer's World-Wide Web site at http://www.apple.com.

Installing Alternate Sources on Macintosh

Your CD-ROM contains the following Macintosh folders and files:

  • Please note that Alternate Sources is not designed to be run across a network.

  • Decide whether you want to use the TrueType or the PostScript fonts and then install the them from the CD-ROM's fonts folder. You need to install both the Daily Life and Annaas fonts for Alternate Sources to appear as we intended. If you do not know how to install fonts, please see your system's user manual.

    You can use Alternate Sources without these fonts, however the resulting appearance of the fonts in the windows may not allow you to use the application easily because your operating system will substitute its own fonts for the special Alternate Sources ones.

  • If you'd like faster performance than CD access can provide, create a folder on your hard drive for Alternate Sources. Then copy the application and Alternate Sources data file into the folder you just created on your hard drive.

  • Double-click on the CD-ROM or hard drive version of Alternate Sources (Macintosh) or AltSrc (Windows) file. After the initial copyright screen has been shown for about three seconds, you will be presented with the Details window. Further instructions are available in the booklet provided inside the CD-ROM jewel case. For those who want a quick start without the manual, you will find the Alternate Sources application buttons at the bottom of the the screen are designed to make finding the right function easy. Just click the button you want. Clicking on the Alternate Sources name at the top of any of the windows will take you to a window with ways to contact us and access to the version number and other information about your CD-ROM.

    When using Alternate Sources you can access the Help System at any time by clicking the button with the question mark at the lower right of the window. Context-sensitive help for each window is available by clicking on the question mark at the top left of the window. Clicking on the same question mark when in context-sensitive help will return you to where you were.

    Installing Alternate Sources under Windows

    Please read all of these instructions before you attempt to install or run Alternate Sources.

    System Requirements for Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.5.1

    You will need:

    System Requirements for Windows 3.1

    You will need:

    Installing Alternate Sources under Windows

    Your Alternate Sources CD-ROM contains the following Windows folders and files. Please note that the MS-DOS names are capitalised, under Windows 95, they appear in mixed case): Please note that Alternate Sources is not designed to be run across a network. Please also note that you may safely ignore the Icon_ files on your Alternate Sources CD-ROM.

    If you have Windows 3.1, you will need to install Win32s 1.30c before using Alternate Sources. A copy is provided in the WIN32S1.30C folder, or you can obtain the latest version from Microsoft Corporation (http://Microsoft.com).

    To create Win32s diskettes:

    1. Format three 1.4 MB diskettes and name them Disk1, Disk2, and Disk3.

    2. Drag the contents of the corresponding folders from the CD-ROM onto the diskettes.

      Important: Disk names, filenames, and paths cannot be modified or the Win32s installation will fail.

    To install Win32s on your Windows 3.1 computer from diskettes:

    1. Open the 386 Enhanced control panel and change the virtual memory type to Permanent;

    2. Make sure that the swap file size is at least 20480KB;

    3. Select Use 32-Bit Disk Access and Use 32-Bit Access, if available;

      If you have had to make an changes to your settings, restart Windows before installing Win32s;

    4. Install Win32s: From the Program Manager, run SETUP.EXE in the WIN32S1.30C folder;

    5. At the end of the Win32s installation, you will be asked whether you want to install the game Freecell. We recommend that you do, because running it will help verify that the Win 32s softwere has been installed correctly.

    6. Restart your computer before installing or running Alternate Sources;

    7. After running Alternate Sources for the first time, make sure that the 4WINSYS folder is in the Windows System folder.

    To install and run Alternate Sources:

    1. Install the TrueType fonts from the CD-ROM's fonts folder on your system. You need to install both the Daily Life and Annaas fonts for Alternate Sources to appear as we intended. If you do not know how to install fonts, please see your system's user manual. (You can use Alternate Sources without these fonts, however the resulting appearance text in the windows may not allow you to use the application easily because your operating system will substitute its own fonts for the special Alternate Sources ones.)

    2. If you decide to install Alternate Sources on your hard drive, create a folder for the Alternate Sources files. Copy the Alternate Sources application and data files, the 6 .dlls, and, if you are running Windows 3.1, the 4WINSYS folder into the folder you just created on your hard disk. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT, you do not need the 4WINSYS folder or its contents.

    3. Do not copy the System folder or its contents from the CD-ROM to your hard drive folder. They are there for future use only.

    4. If you are using Windows 3.1 and you intend to run Alternate Sources from your hard disk, do not run it until you have copied the 4WINSYS folder to your Alternate Sources folder on your hard disk.

    5. On Windows 3.1 systems, the first time you run Alternate Sources, it will move the needed contents of the 4WINSYS folder on your hard disk into your Windows System folder.

    Do not rename any of the Alternate Sources files. If you do, it is possible that Alternate Sources will not function properly.

    To run the Alternate Sources application, double-click on the CD-ROM or installed hard drive version of the AltSrc application file.

    On all Windows systems, the first time you run Alternate Sources, you should double-click on the application file, not the data file. This is because the application extension associated with Alternate Sources (.AS3) will not be registered with the operating system until the application file has been opened once. If you attempt to double-click on the datafile before the application has been registered, the application will not be found.

    Recovering Damaged Hard Disk Files

    If you discover that your hard disk copy of Alternate Sources does not work, reinstall a fresh copy from your CD-ROM. On Windows 3.1 computers, you may have to reinstall Win32s and the .dll files.
